Leah Gipson is an Assistant Professor in the Art Therapy and Counseling Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). She is a registered and board-certified art therapist (ATR-BC), and a licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC) in Illinois, with a Master of Theological Studies. She provides group supervision for BIPOC art therapists to obtain their art therapy registration and clinical professional counseling licensure. Her additional counseling training includes sexual and domestic violence, HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention, substance use and addiction.
Leah Gipson is a board member for A Long Walk Home, an organization that uses the arts to empower young people and end violence against women and girls. She is also a board member of Praxis, an organization that provides affordable, democratically managed housing to individuals and families involved in social justice movement building. She is an organizing member of the Critical Pedagogy in the Arts Therapies Think Tank, initiated in 2018. Some of her recent and past projects include: Care Sessions, an arts and well-being program partnership with Chicago community organizers through the Office of Engagement at SAIC Homan Square; DIVISIVE, a radio show that explores the intersections and interactivity between politics and cultural work; The Rectory, a participatory arts incubator space in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago; and T.R.A.C.E. (Teens Reimagining Art Community and Environment) with the Chicago Park District.
